Pests You Need to Watch Out for Once the Rainy Season Begins

Do you notice an influx of bugs and other insects in your home once the rains start? Chances are, this inrush of pests is a result of the inclement weather in your area. Certain pests, such as mosquitoes, thrive during the rainy season. That’s why you need to find ways to manage their population and better, get rid of them for good.

But aside from mosquitoes, did you know that many other insects tend to infest homes at the start of the rainy season?

Cockroaches

Cockroaches thrive in places that flood quickly, which often happens during winter and early spring. But to survive the coldness of winter, they need to find a place that’s humid and warm at the same time. That’s why you can often find them in drains, sewers, and any other tiny crawl space that they can find.

Once the massive rainfall floods come in, these small critters will find a new place to avoid drowning. So, they often end up in our homes. Once the heavy rain ceases, the humidity caused by the changing weather will make all kinds of spaces more habitable for them.

Sowbugs

Sowbugs are almost identical to beetles, except that they have 14 legs and a series of plates resembling a shell. For sowbugs to survive, they need moisture to breathe. You can often find these insects on moist soil or sand.

But once the rain comes in, it fills the air with moisture, which enables these sowbugs, as well as boxelder bugs, to live longer in areas where they wouldn’t normally thrive. If given the opportunity, these types of bugs will start reproducing inside your home. This makes it frustrating for homeowners later on, urging them to call for expert solutions for sowbug and boxelder bug control in their Salt Lake City homes.

Ants

Another problem that most homeowners encounter during the rainy season is ants. Ants commonly build colonies outdoors. But since these colonies are prone to flooding, they often move to higher grounds. As soon as the rainy season begins, ants will hurriedly find a way to get inside your house.

Once they’re inside, they will begin to scout for food and a place to relocate or even expand their colony. Soon, you’ll see them crawling around your kitchen sink and even in your cupboards even after the rain has passed.

Centipede

Like all the other insects on the list, centipedes also get attracted to humid or wet environments. But one primary difference between centipedes and the insects mentioned above is its role. Centipedes are known as predators, which means that they hunt other insects for food.

Although they can help you with managing the population, having centipedes is like having house spiders. The only way to get rid of them is to treat the pest problem for good.

These are only a few of the insects that you need to watch out for when the rains start. To prevent them from thriving inside your home, make sure that you don’t leave any food unsealed. Always clean the tables to make sure that no food debris will be left behind.
