The world, as we know it, is no longer the same as it had been decades prior. It’s true that a huge part of it has to do with the countless progressions we’ve made, but some of these achievements we’ve attained at the risk of our planet. Now, we can easily feel the repercussions of all the damage that we’ve inflicted on the environment. Higher temperatures, drought, flash floods — these are only some of the many disasters we’ll continue to experience if we don’t do anything to remedy the problem.
It’s quite fortunate that many of us have taken the stand to fight climate change and global warming. Some projects are bigger than others, but all of them are products of good intentions.
Large-Scale Projects
Projects that are national or global in scale are usually led by organisations that are committed to one movement only. This is so everyone on the team can focus all of their attention on making the movement successful.
- Wastewater Management and Purification – Wastewater is one of the leading causes of the destruction of natural habitats. Areas affected by untreated wastewater can have their pH balance disrupted. This can result in wildlife dying or getting sick, which ultimately stunts their growth and leaves them vulnerable in the food chain. The plants, meanwhile, are left inedible if affected by the acid in the water.
Good thing, some private companies are specialising in wastewater management to combat this problem. They do so by filtrating the wastewater before it’s exposed to bodies of water. This is accomplished with the use of equipment like solid-liquid separator machines and single stage vacuum pumps.
- Team Trees – Trees are known for their many uses. But, their functionality usually lies in the environment. They can improve air quality, reduce noise pollution, and bring down temperatures. The tree population has gone down significantly, but many organisations are working to remedy this.
One is Arbor Day Foundation, which, with the help of popular YouTuber MrBeast, has vowed to plant 20 million trees after receiving that amount in dollar donations before 2019 ended. Aside from monetary donations, anyone can volunteer to plant saplings as well.
Individual Efforts
Not everyone can participate in wide-scale projects, but this doesn’t mean that we can’t help. In our own time, certain lifestyle choices can make a huge impact if a lot of people choose to do it.
- 3Rs – ‘Reduce, reuse, recycle’ is a slogan that has existed for years, but the need to follow it has never been more pertinent than today. One of the best ways that we can abide by the 3Rs is by replacing single-use items with reusable ones. Examples are water bottles, cotton rounds, and plastic bags. Instead, we should bring our own water containers when going out, and invest in cotton rounds that we can throw in the wash once a week. As for plastic bags, we can use tote bags when grocery shopping.
Other things we can do are to learn about proper waste segregation and to use biodegradable trash to make compost at home. This compost can then be used to nurture our gardens, and even encourage us into planting seeds that grow into edible resources like vegetables.
When it comes to the quest of saving our environment, every effort and action counts regardless of how inconsequential they may seem.
